- Myths of Gender: Biological Theories about Women and Men [Book], by Anne Fausto-Sterling. Basic Books, Inc., Publishers: NY (1985) 258 pp.
- Sexing the Body: Gender Politics and the Construction of Sexuality, by Anne Fausto-Sterling. Basic Books, Inc., Publishers: NY. 480 pp. This path-breaking study of gender and sexuality is the first to go beyond the nature/nurture debate to offer an alternate framework for considering questions of sex and sexuality. Through an inquiry into intersexuals, or hermaphrodites, a biologist questions the ways that science has defined human sexuality and examines both the scientific and cultural debates about sexual identity. Fausto-Sterling's earlier work, Myths of Gender, has become a standard text in women's studies courses.
- The Mismeasure of Woman: Why Women are not the Inferior Sex, the Superior Sex, or the Opposite Sex [Book], by Carol Tavris. 1992. 398 pages.
